Thursday Thirteen #10

Thirteen Memoirs I've Read, Will Be Reading and You Should Read

1. A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer
2. The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family by Dave Pelzer
3. The Privilege of Youth: A Teenager's Story of Longing for Acceptance and Friendship by Dave Pelzer
4. The Women Who Raised Me: A Memoir by Victoria Rowell (when she died on Young & the Restless, I about died myself - favorite soap chicka. Then I figured out why. She wrote her memoir and she's already published) *sigh*
5. An Unlit Path by Deborah Hannah
6. The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
7. Angela's Ashes: A Memoir by Frank McCourt
8. Like Family: Growing Up in Other People's Houses by Paula McLain
9. Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by Jerry Robison
10. Once In A House On Fire: A Memoir by Andrea Ashworth
11. A Phoenix Rising: Defining the Moments by Bryan Nash
12. Blackbird, A Childhood Lost and Found by Jennifer Lauck
13. Foster Me Up: Entering the System Doesn't Have to Mean The End by Chuck -- when it's published. I'll let you know. I've heard it will be a great read.

I would add my thoughts on each, but you can do that w/out my help. I would love to hear how you guys feel about reading memoirs. A lot of people don't care to even give it a go. Feedback much welcomed.

My Mom is a huge Y&R fan, I wonder if she knows of Victoria's memoir? I'll ask her.

I have never heard of Xango before. I'd like to hear more. Is it available in Canada?

Thanks so much for stopping by :)

Tink said...

I've only read Frank McCourt, but I'll check out the rest. Especially 13 sounds very interesting! :-)
Thanks for visiting my Dalai Lama quotes!

I hear a lot about Angela's Ashes but I haven't yet steeled myself to read it.

I LOVE memoirs. I've read several of those. A few others look good.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm not 100% yet, but I am starting to feel like a human again. :)

I have read a few of these 1,2 & 7 - 3- I read extracts of. Great reads though very bittersweet.

I enjoy reading memoirs - true stories you imagine if you tried.

The most interesting sounding one is #13. I would read that one in a hot second. Write!!! Have a great TT pal. :)

Feeling stoopid, haven't read any of them...I'll go back to my Photoshop now:)

Hiya Chuck! Great list. NO WONDER you're so smart with that big brain of yours.

I love reading period and all of those sound very interesting. I've heard of quite a few of those but have never read them. I would especially like to read Angela's Ashes. I may or may not have read A Child Called It. That does sound very familiar and the more I think about it the more I think I read that back in high school. Great list!

I remember from my days working in bookstores that the Dave Pelzer books were extremely popular. I had no idea that Victoria Rowell's character on Y&R had died. Even though I mainly watch the ABC soaps, I sometimes follow the comings and goings on some of the other soaps.

I've come to appreciate this genre with time. I think memoir truer than any set of facts. Thanks for the recommendations!

Wow I'm impressed that you've read all of these. Happy TT to you...

jenn said...

I've never heard of any of these. Which was your favorite?

I'm looking forward to reading that last one!

Cool list. I spent the better part of this decade counseling foster children in Los Angeles County and I have actually read Victoria Rowell's book. Remember when you die on the soaps you can always come back. Thanks for sharing this list. I will past the titles on to some of my colleagues who still work with these children. Happy TT.

I read #1 and cried and cried.

I read a huge amount of fiction. Write it, too.

I have yet to meet a memoir I've finished AND liked.

Sorry. I've tried.

candyQ said...

I've read # 1, 2 & 7 but # 1 made me cry a lot and wonder how any mother can be that cruel.

pjazzypar said...

Hey Chuck, I will definitely keep in touch and look forward to your book. Good luck to you. There are a lot of children who will find comfort and solace in your story.

Sharon said...

What an interesting list! I've skimmed #1 before but never actually read it. I'd love to hear your review of it!
Have a good day!

Lori said...

Great list but Im more of a John Saul kinda girl;) Happy TT my friend. I hope all is wonderful in your world!!

Pelzer is awesome. I encouraged a lot of my students to read him--turned a lot of them onto reading. Great list-adding them to my "Must reads"--including your "soon-to-be released" memoir.

tasha said...

I confess I've never read a Memoir before -- I'd very much like to; I'll have to tuck your list away for the future, when "free" reading time is available to me again, ha! Happy TT!

If you like memoirs, I'm giving away two on my blog: "How to Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire" and "Hungry Hill." The info is on the top of my blog.

My TT this week is also book themed.

The only memoir on your list that I've read is Angela's Ashes but I'm making note of a couple of others...Great list, Chuck!

You wrote in a comment on my TT post: ok, look. that is not the stuff i would think you would give up for lent. how 'bout the bad stuff??? *scratching my head* the veggies really got me.

Chuck, I'm joking!! All of it is a joke! I guess I wasn't that funny...ha! :)

First, I love your banner and the overall look of this site.

Finally, I consider most blogs to be memoirs in progress.

Keep progressing!

1. A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer
2. The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family by Dave Pelzer
we all in my family read these and were greatly impacted w/ the story-- My parents fostered some children and there were already 10 of us so we just added them in w/o fanfare and it was a good experience overall but the end results for all were not all good which shows me they and we all could have used a lot more of parental time individually/ besides making better choices in adulthood

They all sound very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Happy TT!

Thank you, Hanna. You're always so positive and complimentary. Are you asking if I've read that book or are you saying symbolic? *big bear hugs* back atcha sweetie!

Oh and thank you all for your support and kind words. You've seriously inspired me more than you know.

Jenn: A Child Called It has made the biggest impact on me - it's a quick read too for anybody who's interested in hearing about a survivor who's truly been traumatized by a childhood of unparallelled parental abuse.

Alf: You're kidding. That's funny. Glad you know that trick.

Colin: Thx so much for assisting me w/ spreading around my mug. It really looks great *wink* *hugs*
